On February 12, the Bauer Leaders Academy hosted a Leadership Up Close session featuring Nichol Luoma, offering students an engaging opportunity to explore leadership, career development, and personal growth.
During the conversation, Luoma shared insights on leading with intention, building strong relationships, and navigating professional environments with authenticity and confidence. Her emphasis on values-based leadership and communication resonated strongly with students, particularly those preparing to enter the workforce.

Students reflected on the impact of her perspective, noting how her experiences connected directly to their own leadership journeys. One student shared, “I personally really appreciated the talk, and I believe as a junior planning on joining the workforce, her leadership insight and philosophy on career is extremely helpful.” Others highlighted her ability to lead with both conviction and respect, with one attendee noting her “ability to take stances that align with your values while still honoring the opinions of those who may disagree.”
Her focus on listening and relationship-building stood out as a key takeaway. As one student shared, “I was especially struck by how you emphasized listening and relationship building as core parts of effective leadership, not just decision making.” Students also found inspiration in her personal story, including her growth through challenges and her path as a first-generation college student.
Leadership Up Close continues to be a cornerstone of leadership development at WashU, connecting students with leaders who model authenticity, resilience, and purpose while encouraging reflection and growth.
